You get precious real estate on Instagram, so it’s so very important to write an Instagram bio that gets leads for your business. When someone lands on your profile it’s your one chance to tell them who you are, why you’re unique and why they should follow you, and oh yeah…. you better sound like the coolest person on the planet while you’re at it.

It’s A LOT to try and fit in just 150 characters, but it’s definitely worth the extra effort to get right.

Having a well thought out and efficient bio will help you get real leads, I’ve seen it happen time and time again.

How to Write an Instagram Bio that Generates Leads

Here’s what we are going to cover in this post:

  • Common mistakes people make with their bios
  • Steps to writing YOUR perfect bio
  • A couple super healpful Instagram bio hacks

Let’s start with what we shouldn’t do.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with their Instagram bios is they leave off the important information.

“Bubble gum loving hippie in Toronto.”

This type of bio would be fine if you are a well-known personality or for a personal account, but if you are running a business, this will not convert for you. We all want to be witty and cool on Insta, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of giving the necessary information.

What do you do?

Where are you?

How does someone buy from you?

The person who lands on your profile came there because something interested them about you, make sure you give them the information they are looking for.

Another big mistake is not having a business account, especially for locally based businesses. Business accounts allow you to give extra information about where you’re located (a very important detail), get directions and how to contact you without using your valuable 150 characters. If you haven’t switched to a business account, do it ASAP!

So how do you write a great bio that will get results?

Here are 5 steps to getting started.

1. Know who you’re talking to.

Who is your ideal customer or client? It could be brides in a certain area, moms who love healthy food or people who are passionate about knitting. Have a certain type of audience in mind when you go to write your bio. If your business is broad and reaches a lot of people, focus on the benefits or things that all your customers have in common.

2. Write down the keywords that describe your personality.

Thiѕ next step, brainstorming! Just sit down and write уоur interests, асtivitiеѕ, philosophies аnd thingѕ you have accomplished; write down everything that comes to mind and don’t stifle yourself. Keep theѕе personal fоr nоw (nо buѕinеѕѕ rеlаtеd kеуwоrdѕ).

Whеn you have a list оf about 15-20 keywords, pick 3 or 4 оf thе mоѕt аttrасtivе traits. If уоu аrе hаving a hаrd time choosing, think аbоut how реорlе likе tо dеѕсribе уоu or еvеn bеttеr, call ѕоmе friеndѕ аnd аѕk thеm to аnѕwеr thе question fоr уоu: “if you wеrе to describe me, whаt words wоuld уоu uѕе?”. Yоu will gеt grеаt idеаѕ!

3.  Write down the keywords that describe your business.

The third ѕtер is to think about thе buѕinеѕѕ side of things. Do the ѕаmе еxеrсiѕе аѕ in stер 2 with kеуwоrdѕ thаt would describe YOU in business. Nоt kеуwоrdѕ that dеѕсribе thе business itѕеlf but YOU in your buѕinеѕѕ, whаt are your ѕtrеngthѕ аnd whаt you hаvе ассоmрliѕhеd. What makes your work different than everyone else?

Think about the things your clients say about you in reviews or testimonials. Or just ask them!

4. Write it out!

Now that you know your keywords or traits, it’s time to get writing. Try to marry the keyword from the personal and business lists, while still stately planly what business you are in.

5. Add a call-to-action.

The call-to-action is something so many people miss! It’s a simple statment at the end or your bio that says how your followers can learn more. It could be “Shop here”, “Email me for inquiries” or “Latest post”. My favorite way to do this is to use the finger pointing down emoji (this guy ).

Speaking of emojis, they are a great way to liven up your bio and make it more fun (I mean, who doesn’t love emojis?!) You don’t need to go overboard, but a couple well-placed emojis will help you tell your story and make your bio stand out.

Instagram bio hacks:

Use Linktr.ee: This is an awesome feature that allows you to create a landing page from your Instagram link for multiple destinations. You could link to your shop, your homepage, blog or other social media accounts. It’s super easy to change these out and it also keeps track or stats so you know who is clicking.

Write your bio in notes first: Ever wonder how people get those cool spaces and extra characters in their bios? Write your bio in the notes on your phone first with all the spaces and emojis you want, then paste it into Instagram.

Low on characters? A couple tips for saving space. Replace “and” with “&”, take out spaces after periods and get rid of any words that are not absolutely necessary to the overall message. If it can be said with an emoji, use that instead!

Change it up. Don’t write your bio and then forget about it, change it up every couple months and change out your links as needed. If you’re running a discount, have a new blog post, a new service or are pushing one thing in your business, add these to your bio. Use it as an ever-evolving way to communicate with your audience.
